So while this verse from 1 Corinthians is part of a much larger context (and much of it a rebuke) it is also a stark reminder for us today.
Our idolatry, and giving ourself to other things, is not just "empty and hollow". While it certainly is empty and hollow in many respects, it's actually quite full and meaningful, just in a demonic sense.
God (though Paul) reminds us that when we don't serve Him, we end up serving demons. There is no "neutral zone" in our spiritual war - we are either for, or against, God. When we fail to worship Him, we are actively serving the enemy.
Let us take pause, caution, and examine our lives. Let God search and reveal to us our sinful and wandering hearts, and may we call upon Him to protect us, guide us, and keep us close. May we not serve another and so profane the name of our LORD ...
His,
~Matthew
