Psalm 2 - Our Lord Reigns
In a world that seems turned upside down lately, one thing is still certain - Our LORD Reigns!
Reading Psalm 2 gives us another type of contrasting picture. Unlike Psalm 1 and the contrast between the righteous and the wicked, we see the contrast between kingdoms and rulers … earthly kingdoms and rulers, and the sovereignty of God’s Kingdom and His Reign …
The ‘nations’ and ‘kings of the earth’ are trying to set themselves against the LORD. Much tribulation, bondage, and evil are being felt among God’s people, yet God is never alarmed.
In fact, as He sits on His throne watching, we read one final warning to such ‘rulers’ as the Psalm closes:
Psalm 2:10–12
Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.
Serve the LORD with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him. (ESV)
Essentially, they are told to simply submit, or face the consequences.
Yet "they" quickly turns to "we" ...
May we “take refuge” in Him personally as well, not just corporately as a church or point to the sinful nations of the world. The choice was and is laid out for anyone (or any nation) that stands against the LORD … He is patient, and it may seem as though at times His Hand is stayed too long – yet in His perfect timing, action will follow …
