Psalm 7 – The Refuge for those that Repent
Another lament of David, that covers many things I could reflect on.
David’s openness to be judged by God if his perspective is the incorrect one (vv. 3-5), David’s understanding of his righteousness before and through God (v. 8) - often misunderstood as pride until you understand David more. We could also talk about his reminder how God will test our minds and hearts (v. 9), or even how the tangled webs of lies we weave will result in ourselves falling into our own traps (vv. 14-16) … so much!
Yet today, I feel compelled to remind us of the harder truth, and that is the consequence for those that choose not to repent …
Psalm 7:12–13
If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword;
he has bent and readied his bow;
he has prepared for him his deadly weapons,
making his arrows fiery shafts. (ESV)
As quoted by C. S. Lewis (in shortened form) Jesus was either a liar, lunatic, or LORD. We are all free to think what we want. While not directly speaking of the coming messiah (Jesus) here, it’s a similar approach when we read the Bible as a whole.
We either accept it – or we reject it … God indeed is love … but He is also Holy and Just.
We either submit, repent, and find refuge … or we do not. His refuge protects us from sin and evil … His refuge would be no refuge at all if we brought sin along for the ride.
Some sin takes a while to die … and that’s expected. We will never be free from sin this side of eternity. Yet may we by the power of the Holy Spirt let God whet His sword on the sin in our life, and allow Him to slay it …
We are an Easter people all year long – and the tomb is indeed empty! But it cost a cross … a cross we created. Let us not take Grace lightly …
