When Love Makes Labor Light
“So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her.”
Genesis 29:20 (NKJV)
And of course, if we remember the broader story, this comes before the painful chapters of deception, people trying to play God, relational conflict, polygamy (never commanded or ordained), and an enormous family mess. And yes—woven through all of that is a powerful testimony of a God who redeems sinners, bringing life from death for HIS glory and our good, even when we don’t deserve a shred of it.
But this morning, I just want to sit with this one verse.
“So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her.”
Years of serving the one he loved felt like nothing.
And yet, God has given us infinitely more than Rachel ever could have given Jacob—even if everything had gone perfectly, even if it had been the ideal marriage with perfect children. That would still pale in comparison to what God has given us in Christ.
We are rightly drawn to GOD for many reasons—HIS holiness, justice, mercy, faithfulness, and more. But may HIS love be so irresistible that serving HIM, even in this broken, sin-tainted world, feels light and momentary… because of what is to come.
His,
Matthew
