God is always ready ...
'Fire shall be kept burning on the altar continually; it shall not go out. '- Leviticus 6:13
I recently reflected on this - and how the priests were commanded to continually keep the sacrificial fire burning. It is a great reminder for us to continue the work of God that He commands us to do.
Yet there is even more to this ...
While it would be sinful for us to continue animal sacrifices, after the Lamb of God was sacrificed once for all time, what was the point of this perpetual sacrificial flame? We discussed it was the work of the priest to obey, but what does it tell us of our God?
I think John MacArthur summarizes this well when he stated: "The perpetual flame indicated a continuous readiness on the part of God to receive confession and restitution through the sacrifice."
Did you get that? A continuous readiness ...
God was saying then, and is saying now through the sacrifice of His Son:
Whenever you want to confess, repent, and return to Me, I'm ready ... any moment of any day ...
To the unbeliever, it's a loving but sobering call - and reminder - that a choice needs to be made ...
To those that have made this Great Confession, it's still a beautiful reminder of a God - our God - that never slumbers, sleeps, and is always ready ...
He was - He is - and He is to come ...
Come Lord Jesus ...
His,
~Matthew
