Because I Said So

Marriage ... a word for some that brings joy, excitement, expectation, and contentment ... while for some it brings thoughts of fear, pain, loneliness, and anxiety ...

Whatever it brings, my focus here is less on marriage and more on commitment ... loyalty ... honor ... submission to something greater than yourself ... and love ...

In my own marriage, like any other, even though healthy and strong, there are always times of challenges ... but breaking my vows is just not something I think about ... and while I'm not speaking about cases of abuse that should be brought into the light, I'm simply stating that for me it's not an option on the table ... why?

... because I said so.

It may seem a challenging jump, but I was reminded about another "because I said so" as I was reading this morning with my daughter through Deuteronomy chapter 6 ...

'"When your son asks you in time to come, 'What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you?' then you shall say to your son, 'We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. And the Lord showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. And he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers. And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day. And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.' ' - Deuteronomy 6:20-25

I love this passage ... Why dad? Because God said so my son ...

We love to have answers ... from childhood to adulthood ... the question "But Why?" seems to litter our vocabulary. As a parent, while we want to have our child learn about why we have certain rules, at the end of the day, if not understood, it may just come down to us telling them, because I said so. I have your best interest in mind. Trust me.

Don't get me wrong, digging in and understanding is great, and even in Scripture, God asks us to bring forth questions, seek understanding, use our minds ... so that we can learn about Him.

We could easily go through the commandments and start to explain why God may have commanded certain things. Don't murder, don't lie, don't steal ... others are harder ... and while we are free from the law and live under Grace, we still have not just a Savior, but a Lord to follow.

And at the end of the day, what answer from Him most matters?

Because I said so. I have your best interest in mind. Trust me.

Trust is hard ... but God is good ...

His,
~Matthew
