Wrestling with Doubt
Just a mini-blog detour on our journey that I wanted to share!
Continuing to read through Doubt: Trusting God’s Promises by Elyse Fitzpatrick, one devotional really brought out the striking contrast in the faith of John the Baptist. I’ve meditated on this before, but seeing the passages placed so closely together gave me a profound sense of the wrestling John must have been going through.
Behold the Lamb of God! Who Takes away the sin of the world!
... Right?
At one moment, John the Baptist was so certain—proclaiming:
“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!… I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on Him… I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God” (John 1:29, 31–33, 34).
Such clarity. Such confidence.
And yet, later—alone in prison—John sent to ask Jesus:
“Are You the One who is to come, or shall we look for another?” (Matt. 11:3).
A humbling reminder, that even the strongest can feel shaken.
But here’s the beauty—Jesus didn’t rebuke him. He pointed John back to the evidence, to truth that would steady his heart again.
And then, He publicly honored him:
“Among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist” (Matt. 11:11).
Jesus doesn’t shame us when we doubt—He meets us with grace and reminds us why we can trust Him.
